The Master of Cabestany

Outside, on the semi-circular chevet, one can admire the capitals and brackets by the Master of Cabestany. Two of these are historiated. One depicts "Daniel in the Den of Lions", the other "The Punishment of the Babylonians". The Master was a distinguished sculptor of the end of the 12th century. He worked in Spain (Navarre), in Italy (Tuscany) but mainly in France (Pyrénées Orientales and Aude). His characters are typical : faces and heads triangular, oval globular eyes pierced with two drill holes at the corners of the eyelids, straight noses, big ears standing out, beards and hair with long streaks, hands with disproportionately elongated fingers.
